local anesthesia

An induced local loss of sensitivity due to application of a local anaesthetic agent (a drug which prevents nerves from transmitting a signal). There are several forms; regional anaesthesia (blocking a specific nerve or nerves so that a defined area such as a the distal limb is anaesthetised), infiltrative or local anaesthesia (infiltrating a small part of the body such as a joint of a patch of skin through direct application of a local anaesthetic).
