Resting behaviour - hind limb unloaded

leg resting

When resting, a horse is able to 'fix' a hindlimb in a weight bearing position through activation of the passive stay apparatus of the hindlimb. This enables the contralateral limb to be unloaded or rested for a certain period of time without excessive muscular fatigue of the loaded limb. The resting horse will regularly alternate between the left and right hindlimb.
