marking

Any area of a horse's coat that is a different colour to its general coat colour. Most common are white markings on the head (star, stripe, blaze, snip etc.) and on the legs (socks, stockings, etc.). Other markings include patches or spots of a darker or lighter colour anywhere on the horse, zebra marks (darker stripes on a horses limbs, quarters or neck) and grey ticking (occasional white hairs throughout the coat or in a particular area). Markings may also be acquired during the horse's lifetime e.g. freeze brands or scars or pressure sores which result in white hairs.

Markings are used as identifying features with which to create an outline diagram.
