hypertrophy

hypertrophism

An enlargement of a tissue or an organ, typically caused by an increase in the number or size of cells. In certain tissues (eg bone) it is also caused by an increase in the amount of extra cellular matrix (the substance that fills the gaps between cells).

On a cellular level, hypertrophy refers to enlargment of individual cells rather than to a increase in the number of cells.
