draw reins

Type of auxiliary reins that run from the rider's hand through the rings of the bit. From there they are normally fixed to the girth between the horse's front legs, the girth itself on either side of the horse, or a breast plate. Their purpose is to encourage the horse to hold its head and neck in a long-and-low position. They must not be used to "tie down" a horse's head behind the vertical.
