A slimey liquid substance secreted by certain cells in the mucosa. It covers the mucous membrane and forms a protective layer, e.g. in the mouth, the gastrointestinal tract, the lungs, or the female reproductive organs. Besides water, mucous contains salts, enzymes, antibodies, and other proteins.
