Muscle tissue is one of the four basic tissue types. Muscle tissue is made of muscle cells which function to produce motion. The result is either locomotion or movement within internal organs (e.g. beating heart).

There are 3 types of muscle tissue: cardiac muscle in the heart and smooth muscle in the other internal organs, these are controlled without conscious thought. The third type, skeletal muscle, is responsible for movement, is consciously controlled and  found throughout the locomotory system.
