• Instead of a dressing, the defect may also be protected with a hospital plate until it is covered over with new horn. Before attaching the plate, the underside of the hoof will need to be cleaned and disinfected and covered with a swab soaked in disinfectant. The hospital plate should be removable to enable treatment of the puncture site.

• Once normal shoeing can be resumed, it is advisable to use wedge shoes for a certain period (first shoeing interval) if the navicular region was involved (navicular bursa, navicular bone and/or deep flexor tendon), to relieve pressure in the area.
