Picked-up nail – Differential diagnoses

Foreign body that does not penetrate the hoof capsule

Stones and pieces of wood or metal may become wedged into the underside of the hoof, usually in the collateral sulci, or between hoof and horseshoe, causing lameness without penetrating the hoof capsule. This may give rise to blunt trauma (haematomas, bruising). If the horse is no longer lame once such a foreign body is removed, it may be exercised normally.
