long reins

Very long reins (up to 20m in length) that are attached to the bit on a bridle and run through rings on a lunging roller and from there to the handler. They are used for working a horse without a rider. The handler can walk beside or behind the horse with the outside rein either running behind the horses quarters or over its back. It allows more freedom of movement than a lunge as the horse can be turned to either side and signals to the horse's mouth can be given is a similar fashion to when being ridden or driven.
