Stockholm or pine tar is made from pine wood that is heated to 250°C in anoxic conditions (dry distillation). The resulting black viscous fluid is an extremely good preservative, traditionally used to protect hooves that are continously exposed to damp conditions. As the tar forms a seal on the hoof, it is important to thoroughly clean and desinfect the areas before applying the tar.

Stockholm tar was also a mainstay of the shipping industry, where it was used to preserve wooden hulls and ropes from rot.
