Structure & function – Blood vessels

Blood vessels are tubes that either carry blood to the heart (veins) or carry it away from the heart (arteries). Blood vessels branch repeatedly and carry the blood into every part of the body.

All blood vessels have a smooth, thin inner layer (endothelium) and an outer layer of connective tissue which attaches the vessel to its surroundings. Larger blood vessels additionally have a muscular middle layer.
