Picked-up nail – Clinical signs

Following removal of the foreign body

• Considerably increased pulsation of the digital artery 

• The hoof feels warmer

• The digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) may be distended and feel hotter

• The horse’s general condition may deteriorate and it may develop a fever

• Walking/trotting in hand: Moderate to severe lameness and pain; the horse may try to avoid placing weight on the affected region i.e. by landing toe or heel first.
