The length of the horseshoe should be such that the heels of the shoe cover the angle of the wall and extend back slightly (ideally to the point where a vertical line dropped from half the heel height meets the ground). This provides the heels of the hoof with adequate support. However, in horses which frequently overreach and have a tendency to pull their shoes, the length of fit should be somewhat reduced.
