Different studs are used in accordance with the use of the horse and season of the year and this may influence the selection of the shoe. In order to provide the studs with a firm anchorage, the horseshoe must have the requisite thickness. When using studs, horseshoes with a thickness of 8 mm or less are problematic as they might lift off the heels of the shoe. Screw-in studs are preferred by show jumpers and are easier to use with thin shoes.
