Selecting the horseshoe – Horseshoe thickness

The horseshoe thickness must be selected according to:

• the size and weight of the horse

• the use of the horse

• the nature of the surface on which the horse is usually worked

The thickness of horseshoes in normal use is 8, 10 or 12 mm (5/16, 3/8, 7/16 and ½ inch). The thickness of the horseshoe has a direct influence on the durability and weight of the shoe.
