In order to be able to estimate the correct shoe size, the horseshoe can be laid on the bearing edge and moved to and fro. This allows an estimate to be made as to how much of the shoe protrudes or is short on the inner and outer bearing edge. If, when trying 2-clip shoes for size, the clips are in the way, then the horseshoe can be placed on the hoof with the ground surface side facing down on the bearing edge.
