Hyperaemic mucous membranes are a typical sign of sepsis or endotoxaemia

endotoxin

A toxic substance that consists of cell wall components of gram negative bacteria. The toxins are released when the bacteria die. If this occurs within the digestive tract or the bloodstream the endotoxins can lead to the development of high fever. Endotoxin is toxic even in very small quantities.
