Exercise – Flight behaviour

A horse’s flight instinct is based on its former situation as a free-ranging prey animal. Flight usually takes the form of a short burst of rapid movement and will occur in response to both actual and assumed danger. Only after putting distance between itself and the perceived threat will a horse check whether the danger was real. In a group setting, social facilitation ensures that the whole group of horses takes off together, even though only one animal may have perceived a threat.
