Communication – Olfactory

  • Sniffing (nasonasal and nasogenital) 
  • Flehmen response (curling the upper lip to make use of the vomeronasal organ);  used mainly be the stallion after genital sniffing and when checking droppings and urine.

Horses communicate with each other (and with humans in their surroundings) more or less continuously, even though many signals are too subtle for the human to detect.
