Equine behaviour – Human-equine interaction

The characteristics of equine social interaction described above (with the possible exception of mating behaviour) play an important role in the relationship between humans and horses and form the basis of successful communicating with, or handling and training of domestic horses. In the wild, the horse’s status as a grazing and herd animal and its interaction with other group members are the governing forces behind all forms of behaviour. Furthermore, many aspects of equine behaviour, including feeding, resting and mating behaviour, are characterised by routines.  Consideration for horses’ physiological and social requirements together with their affinity for routines forms the basis of successful husbandry and management.
