Communication – Tactile

Friendly or playful interaction between horses. Generally only tolerated by mares when in season.

Horses resting nose to tail, thereby receiving some protection from flies through the tail of their neighbour

Biting with aggressive intent. Behaviour used to drive away unwelcome neighbours or rivals

Body contact: physical contact between horses takes place as a result of social interaction or aggression; there are several typical forms:

  • Nose to nose contact (greeting)
  • Social grooming
  • Comfort (particularly between mare and foal)
  • Insect control (typical nose to tail contact)
  • Play or confrontation between competing males
