The splint bones are rudimets of additional metacarpal/metatarsal bones that were present in the horse's ancestors

rudiment

A term refering to evolutionary development, used to describe a feature which has lost a part or all of its function during evolution, but is still present. It can refer to both structural or behavioural characteristics. An example in the horse are the splint bones which are rudiments of the second and fourth metacarpal/metatarsal bones.
