Epithelial tissue is one of the four basic types of tissue. Epithelial tissues line the surfaces and cavities of structures throughout the body. Functions of epithelial cells include secretion, absorption and protection. Epithelial tissue is avascular so it receives nourishment from the underlying connective tissue to which it is connected via a basement membrane.
