Polo pony with running gag bit

gag bit

The gag bit is a modified snaffle bit with shanks that has a similar effect to the Pelham, but typically has no curb chain or chin strap. There are several different types. The Pessoa or continental gag has additional rings above and below the rings at the mouthpiece which act like metal shanks and give the bit a lever-action on the poll. The lifter or elevator gag has long shanks with rings above and below a sliding mouthpiece. The running gag bit has straps attached directly to the cheekpieces which run though openings in the main mouthpiece ring. Reins attached to these straps act directly on the horse's poll as well as on the bit's mouthpiece. All gag bits can be used with one or two sets of reins (one attached to the main rings, one to the lower rings or the straps.
