heterozygous

Inherited genetic traits are controlled by genes. All genes are present in pairs - one that is passed on from the mother, one from the father. In a heterozygous state, the two copies of the gene differ. In other words, the gene has varying alleles. For example the copy received from the mother codes for blue eyes, while the copy from the father codes for brown eyes.
