hyaluronate

hyaluronan

A large glycosaminoglycan molecule that is found throughout the body in connective, epithelial and neural tissue. It plays a significant role in the extracellular matrix of hyaline cartilage, where aggregates of hyaluronic acid bind large quantites of water, making the cartilage very pressure resistant. It is also a main component of joint fluid, where it is responsible for the high viscosity typical of healthy joint fluid.
