The protrusion of an organ of parts thereof through the wall of the cavity in which it is normally contained. The organ most commonly affected is the intestine. The gap in the wall may be natural (i.g. the inguinal ring) or unnatural, in which case it is usually of traumatic origin (e.g. diaphragmatic hernia where the intestine is displaced into the thoracic cavity).
