Also known as the kneecap, the patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the body, situated just in front of the stifle joint in the tendon of insertion of the large extensor muscle of the stifle; the Quadriceps femoris. The patella acts as a pulley in the tendon and protects the tendon from an excess of pressure.
