A tumor of the pituitary gland of the brain. The pituitary gland is involved in the regulation of hormones, most significantly endogenous cortisone levels. Tumors of the gland may be hormonally active and lead to permanent hypersecretion of cortisone-like substances. This results in typical clinical signs known as Cushing syndrome, including the development of long hair (retained winter coat) and chronic laminitis.
