A palpable fluctuation of pressure and volume in an artery caused by the contractions of the heart. Pulsation is always present in certain arteries, in others it is only present and palpable if the region to which an artery supplies blood is inflamed (e.g. pulsation of the digital arteries in cases of inflammation in the hoof).
