The piercing of an organ or cavity with a pointed object. This can be done to diagnose or treat a disorder: if the piercing object is hollow (needle or trocar), fluid (or tissue) can be aspirated from the punctured structure or medication applied. A puncture wound is the accidental piercing of the skin and structures beneath it by a sharp object.
